#23, JeanInMontana: UAC has NOTHING to do with it! It's the age old RUN As a different identity that has Admin rights that kills these per user account activations that incorrectly request elevation due to non-selective manifest entries GAOTD now include with every activate.exe even if the activation does not require elevated rights because it only access current user hive and not local machine hive. IF you use UAC and run with Admin rights on your account then UAC drops the elevated security token for your normal day to day operation, when you run a program that requires elevated rights then UAC prompts you for your confirmation before continuing, if you choose to continue then all it does is adjust the security token to permit Admin actions for that process. No change in users profile idenity occours. If you run as limited user then Windows prompts you to supply an Adminstrators credentials which obviously will not be your own and so the Activation will fail if its a per account registry change it'd doing. Couple of choices use
1: Use a resource hacker tool and when Activate.exe only activates the Admin account but your own remove the manifest entry that demands elvated rights.
And moan to GAOTD to only include the manifest entry to require elevated rights when the activation needs it!
2: temproarily alter your current limited user account to that of an administrator, install and activate the program, then change back the account to a limited user, and leave UAC on it is a crucial layer of protection for vista and above, other tools expect it to be on and do less in their vista version to secure the PC than in their XP versions simply because UAC is expected to be active and providing the necesary protection.
