This is a very solid book for anyone with any type of photographic experiece. It starts off with tips on getting location portraits from 'natives' and working with models. Mid book you get a brief overview on technique and how to achieve great shots. The final section covers digitally altering your images. This is a high level discussion with step by step for photoshop. If you have some digi photo experience it will provide great tips and step by step. A great addition to any photographers libra...more

Bryan covered the basic elements of people portrait photography with distinctive and descriptive photos of his own.
He started with understanding people so to work with people, continued with utilizing light - front/side/back/Dappled/Diffused, then highlighted composition skills - scale/background/fillup/vertical/ruleofthird/etc, at least ended with simple photo editing techniques.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn or appreciate people portrait, maybe as a beginner.

As I took it up to read the book today, I realised that the at least a part of the evolution of my portraiture can be attributed to this book.
The book is true to it's title. It is light on text, but has a lot of photographs whose captions fully explain the point. I've come away with a lot of creative ideas from this book, which means that the book is a successful one.

While it is a bit out of date, this is a pretty good book. I've been doing portraiture for a while now, there were a few nuggets in here that have really helped my work. In addition, the section on sharpening was especially helpful. Read it. It will improve your work regardless of your skill level.

Dobra książka o fotografii portretowej, można się dowiedzieć sporo rzeczy, zarówno z zakresu techniki robienia zdjęć, kreacji kadru, jak i psychologicznych aspektach interakcji z modelem/modelką. Polecam!

An excellent general book on taking photo portraits of people. Fabulous photos and helpful information to get amateur photographers started in taking good shots of people, with suggestions of where to go for more detailed information on specific topics, such as lighting, communication, etc.
